Eastern Panhandle Report 9-14-12

#3 Martinsburg (3-0) at #6 Morgantown (2-0)
The Martinsburg Bulldogs continue their early season dominance over their opponents last week in a 63-7 win over Handley from Winchester, Va. The Bulldogs scored 5 times in all three phases of the game in a span of 7 minutes in the first quarter to race out to a 35-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Martinsburg’s offense once again benefited from the great field position that they had most of the night so while the numbers are impressive the Bulldogs had a short field to work with for the most part of the night. Martinsburg rushed for 236 yards as a team while Justin “Cookie” Clinton had his best game throwing the ball this year going 9 for 14 for 107 yards and 2 TD’s, Cookie also rushed for 1 score in the game. The Martinsburg defense still continues to hold their opponents down as Handley was only able to get 29 yards rushing in the game and just 136 yards of total offense. Handley’s Sophomore Quarterback Wil Dearing was just 13 for 23 passing for 107 yards.

This week the Bulldogs will face their toughest opponent this year, the Morgantown Mohigans, and for the first time in the last 4 meetings between these two Class AAA powers the game will be played in Morgantown. Martinsburg and Morgantown usually meet in the playoffs and these two teams met twice last year, with the Bulldogs winning both matchups. Morgantown is led by a very talented group of skill players. Running Backs Chazzy Thomas, Alex Weidman and Jalen Thomas lead the attack on the ground while Quarterback Mark Johnson and Wide Receiver Blaine Stewart lead the attack through the air. Morgantown is coming off a very impressive win over Parkersburg South last week.

Martinsburg winning streak was increased to 31 last week which is the 7th longest streak in the nation this week after two of the longest winning streaks were broke last week including Don Bosco Prep who had won 48 in a row. Martinsburg knows that this matchup will be the toughest test to date for the Bulldogs as Morgantown has had this game circled on their schedule since last November and after the last four times when Martinsburg has won against Morgantown a win by the Mohigans Friday Night to break the winning streak and to become the first team to beat the Bulldogs since the 2009 playoff loss to South Charleston would make Morgantown forget about the previous defeats to Martinsburg. It should be a great matchup Friday Night between to great football teams and programs.

Parkersburg South (2-1) at #11 Musselman (2-1)
The Musselman Applemen came up with their most impressive win of the season last week when Musselman came up with a 41-0 shutout of James Wood from Winchester, Va. Musselman was able to rack up 504 yards of total offense, and for the first time this season Musselman was able to get a 100 yard rusher and in this game two running backs passed the century mark. Josh Ferguson picked up 103 yards on 12 carries while Maverick Keller rushed for 101 yards on just 4 carries. Quarterback Caleb Dembeck continues to put up great numbers this season as Caleb was 13 for 120 for 184 yards and 3 TD’s in the win. As impressive as the Musselman offense was the star of the game might be the defense as they gave up just 118 yards of total offense and just 35 yards of rushing.

This week, Musselman welcomes the Parkersburg South Patriots to town, the Patriots are coming off their first loss of the season, a 41-7 loss to the Morgantown Mohigans. Parkersburg South will try to bounce back this week and will rely on the running attack of Jordan Quiocho and Cody Hively and the passing attack of Tyler Bolen. These two teams hooked up in a great contest last year at Parkersburg South with the Applemen pulling out the close win.

Both teams are looking at this game as a big matchup as both teams need this win from a playoff perspective as they both already have 1 loss on the season and a second loss in the first 4 games would put a lot of pressure on the teams not to trip up more than 1 more time throughout the final 6 weeks of the regular season as if either team is sitting at 6-4 they would be on the playoff bubble.

There is a lot riding on this game Friday Night as Parkersburg South makes the long journey to Waldeck Field to take on the Musselman Applemen. Game time is set for 7:00pm and you can hear the game on Sports Radio 1340 WEPM or

Dunbar DC (3-0) at Jefferson (1-2)
The Jefferson Cougars tried to get their second win of the season last week against the Millbrook Pioneers but Millbrook had other ideas as the Pioneers defeated Jefferson 55-6. Jefferson could not stop the ground attack of Justin Anderson who rushed for 152 yards on 16 carries and Quarterback Justin Neff went 8 for 11 for 124 yards and 3TD. As the defense for the Cougars struggled to stop Millbrook the offense could not get anything going as Jefferson Quarterback Andrew King was 12 for 27 passing for 202 yards but Running Back Rynal Newman who rushed for 192 yards the week before was held to just 17 yards on 12 carries.

This week the road does not get any easier for the Jefferson Cougars as Dunbar from Washington DC comes to town. The Crimson Tide are playing well this season as they have started 3-0 on the year and more impressive is they have not given up a point all season outscoring their opponents 101-0. Going back to last year Dunbar has won 9 games in a row and look to continue the streak this Friday Night.

Game time between Dunbar and Jefferson is set for 7:00pm.

James Wood, Va. (1-2) at Hedgesville (1-2)
The Hedgesville Eagles were in the first two games of the season but penalties and turnovers at key times in the game cost Hedgesville a win. Last week against Mountain Ridge, Md. that changed as the Eagles were able to get their first win of the season in a impressive 43-0 win over the Miners. Hedgesville got their first 100 yard rusher of the year in Rashaan Shanton who rushed for 113 yards and scored 3 times while Hunter Weaver picked up 141 yards of total offense in the game. The same problems that plagued Hedgesville early in the year seemed to hurt Mountain Ridge as the Miners surrendered 2 safeties and had four misplayed punts that help secure the win for the Eagles. Hedgesville’s defense stepped up as well holding Mountain Ridge to just 73 yards of total offense in the game.

This week, Hedgesville will be at home and will welcome the James Wood Colonels to town. James Wood suffered at 41-0 loss to Musselman last week in a game where James Wood only got 118 yards of offense and only 35 yards rushing. Bradley Skillman was the leading rusher for James Wood only gaining 19 yards on 8 carries. Quarterback Camden Bailey struggled as well going 8 for 16 for just 83 yards.

Hedgesville will try to get to .500 on the season before their off week to gain some more confidence because after the off week, back to back games against Martinsburg and Musselman. Game time between James Wood and Hedgesville is set for 7:00pm
