I have been with Sports Radio 1340 WEPM since June of 2009, I am the Program Director for the Station and the Play-by-Play voice as well and host In The Zone weekdays from 5P-6P. I have been in the Radio business for 22 years, following in the footsteps of my Dad. I got my start in Radio working overnights at WTNJ in my Senior Year of High School. I have had the pleasure of calling games for some great teams including the Oak Hill Red Devils, the Bluefield Beavers, the Shady Spring Tigers, and now the 5 schools here in the Panhandle. I have also have had the oppurtunity to call play-by-play for WVU Tech for 4 years in the late 90's. I will be blogging about alot of different sports stories that go on both nationally and locally so make sure to stop by often. High School Football Week 2
by Fred Persinger II,posted Aug 28 2012 4:10PM
As we enter Week number 2 of the High School Football season here is a brief look at some of the games:
HD Woodson, DC (0-0) at Martinsburg (1-0)
The Martinsburg Bulldogs started the defense of their State Championship last Friday with an impressive 38-0 shutout of Sherando, Va. The win increased the Bulldogs winning streak to 29, which is tied for 10th in the nation. Martinsburg did have some struggles at time on the offensive side of the ball as they turned the ball over 4 times including 2 times in the red zone, plus had a dropped pass in the end zone for another score. But the good things that happened for Martinsburg out weighed the bad. On the Offensive side, The Bulldogs saw the emergence of Sophomore Trey Boyd, who rushed for 77 yards on 11 carries and 2 scores. On the defensive side of the ball, Martinsburg only gave up 145 yards of total offense, 92 on the ground and 53 through the air, and on Special Teams Martinsburg rolled up 241 return yards including a 52 yard punt return for touchdown by Cedric Brown. This week Martinsburg will try for 30 in a row as the Bulldogs welcome HD Woodson from Washington DC to town, a team that will open up their season for the second year in a row in the Eastern Panhandle. Last year Martinsburg won 48-0. Martinsburg will try to continue its dominance at home as the Bulldogs have not lost at home since 2009 when Park View, Va. defeated Martinsburg. Game time between Martinsburg and HD Woodson is set for 7:00pm
Sherando, Va. (0-1) at Musselman (0-1)
The Musselman Applemen started the 2012 season on the road last week against a very talented Skyline, Va. team. Both squads went back and forth but Skyline was able to pull away in the fourth quarter and pull out a 41-28 win. Musselman fought an uphill battle all night long as Skyline’s Dayvon Haight took the opening kickoff 82 yards for a Touchdown. Musselman fought back to tie the game up at 28 late in the third quarter after a very impressive 99 yard drive. Musselman Senior Quarterback Caleb Dembeck was impressive in the opening game going 22 for 33 passing for 325 yards and 4 TD’s. This week Musselman will open up the home portion of the schedule against the Sherando, Va. Warriors. Sherando will be making their second straight trip up I-81 to the Eastern Panhandle. Last week Sherando lost to Martinsburg by a score of 38-0 as the offense struggled for the Warriors as they only managed 145 yards of total offense in the game. Leading rusher Taylor Loudan was only able to gain 37 yards on 11 carries. This is a very big game for both teams but maybe more so for Musselman as far as the playoffs go. The upcoming schedule include tough games against Parkersburg South, Martinsburg and Shady Spring for Musselman so even though this is not a must win for Musselman in Week 2, it is a very important game for the Applemen to try to bounce back and get their first win of the season. Game time from Waldeck Field in Bunker Hill is set for 7:00pm and it will be the game on the air this week for Sports Radio 1340 WEPM and WEPM.com with a airtime at 5:00pm with our Pre Game Show.
Strasburg, Va. (1-0) at Washington (1-0)
For just the second time in school history the Washington Patriots started the season off with a win. Washington recorded a 14-6 hard fought win over the Hedgesville Eagles in week one thanks to a good running game that saw the Patriots rush for 299 yards, led by Colin Gustines who gained 96 yards on 9 carries and 2 4th quarter touchdowns in a 3 minute span that secured the win for the Patriots. This week, Washington will try to get their first ever 2-0 start as they welcome Strasburg, Va. to town. The Rams are also 1-0 on the season and is coming off a 40-21 win over Stonewall Jackson. Strasburg was led by Senior Running Back Rakwon White who rushed for 168 yards on 13 carries and 1 TD. Game time is set for 7:00pm Friday Night in Charles Town.
Heritage, Va. (0-1) at Hedgesville (0-1)
The Hedgesville Eagles started strong last week against Washington in the opening game of the season, but could not hold on to a early 6-0 lead and ran out of gas late in the fourth quarter as Washington was able to come back and get a hard fought 14-6 win over the Eagles. Hedgesville came into the season with high expectations with QB Troy Markley but an injury in July during a baseball season has taken Markley out for most if not all the 2012 season. So Head Coach Rich Thomaselli has turned to Sophomore Lane Riner who threw for 177 yards and 1 score in the game. This week Hedgesville is back at home as the Heritage Pride come to town. Heritage lost a hard fought game at home last week to James Wood, Va. by a score of 30-27. Heritage was led by Quarterback Michael Galvan who threw for 229 yards and 2 scores, he also rushed for 1 score. Heritage struggled rushing the ball only gaining 59 yards on the ground. Game time between Heritage and Hedgesville is set for 7:00pm
Jefferson (0-1) at Mountain Ridge, Md. (0-0)
The Jefferson Cougars are hoping to improve on the past couple of seasons which saw the Cougars only win 1 game. The season did not get off to the start that the Jefferson Cougars wanted as they opened up the season with a 52-7 loss to Wood Grove, Va. The lone bright spot for Jefferson was a 65 yard pass from Sophomore Quarterback Andrew King to Jeff Walker. Jefferson will hit the road for the second week in a row this week as they travel to Frostburg, Md. to take on the Mountain Ridge Miners. Mountain Ridge is coming off a 9-2 season last year but will have to replace their great running back/defensive back Jarrod Harper who had moved on to play college ball with the WVU Mountaineers. Jefferson will try to bounce back this week but another tough test awaits the Cougars. Game time between Jefferson and Mountain Ridge, Md. is set for 7:00pm
