Hedgesville (2-2) at #6 Martinsburg (4-1)

The Martinsburg Bulldogs find themselves in a position that they have not been in since the start of the 2010 season and that is getting ready to play a game after a loss. Martinsburg lost last Friday 36-33 to Westminster, Md. that is the first loss for the Bulldogs since a quarter-final playoff loss to South Charleston in 2009. In the game last week Martinsburg faced their best team of the season and maybe one of the best teams they have played since the streak began. The Owls were led by the throwing ability of Deryk Kern who went 23 for 43 for 359 yards and 5 Touchdowns. Kern accounted for all but 11 yards of the offense for the Owls in leading them to the win. For Martinsburg, Quarterback Cookie Clinton continued to improve and also continued to improve as being a leader as Clinton led the offense both rushing and passing as he threw for 164 yards and rushing for 154 yards, Clinton also took back a kickoff 95 yards for a score.

So the winning streak is gone but for this Martinsburg team all of the other goals are still within reach and that includes another shot at a state championship and that journey will continue Friday Night against their first Eastern Panhandle opponent in the Hedgesville Eagles. Martinsburg still has a couple of streaks in tact that they will try to improve on including a home winning streak as Martinsburg has not lost at home since a 2009 loss to Park View, Va,. and Martinsburg has not lost to a in state opponent since the 2009 game against South Charleston.

Hedgesville, is coming off a bye week, and is sitting a 2-2 on the season. Hedgesville lost their first two games but have won their last two games and even though the teams do not have the numbers that most AAA schools have the group has gained some confidence with the last two wins. Hedgesville who has been trying to find a quarterback after Troy Markley went down to a off season knee injury and have settled on a combination of two quarterbacks in Sophomore Lane Riner and senior Rashaan Shanton. Ringer who is the passer in the offense while Shandon is the more running QB who can make good cuts and has great speed to run the veer offense. On the Outside, Hedgesville looks to Eli Gates and Hunter Weaver to bring down the passes from Ringer.

This is a long standing Berkeley County Rivalry that has been dominated by Martinsburg as of late. Martinsburg will not be in a good mood after last weeks loss and will look to start another streak this week and it is also Homecoming so another big crowd is expected. Martinsburg and Hedgesville will play Friday Night at 7:00pm.

#14 Musselman (3-2) at Jefferson (1-4)

The Musselman Apple men went into the game last week against the Washington Patriots trying to forget about a frustrating loss to Parkersburg South the week before where the Apple men let a 12 point halftime lead slip away and suffered their second loss of the season 29-26. Their would be no lead slipping away for Musselman last week as they put 41 points on the board and defeated the Washington Patriots 55-34. Musselman and Washington combined for 975 yards of offense in the game. Musselman racked up 598 yards of total offense including 409 yards rushing and 189 yards passing. Musselman had two running backs rush for over 100 yards led by Josh Ferguson who rushed for 155 yards on just 7 carries and two scores. Denote Glover also rushed for over 100 yards getting 115 yards on 9 carries. Maverick Keller just missed the 100 yard rushing barrier carrying the ball for 95 yards on 9 carries. Quarterback Caleb Tembec also had a good game throwing the ball going 6 for 7 for 189 yards and 2 scores. Trevor Wasco was the leading receiver with 3 catches for 95 yards.

This week, Musselman will travel to take on another Jefferson County school in the Jefferson Cougars. The Cougars are sitting at 1-4 and are coming off a 50-7 loss to Sherando, Va. Jefferson’s offense has struggled this season as the Cougars have only scored more than 10 points once this season. Last week Jefferson could not stop the offense of running back Taylor Loudan and Quarterback Reid Entsminger as Loud rushed for 211 yards on 14 carries, while Entsminger threw for 127 yards and three scores. The Warriors defense held Jefferson to just 102 yards of total offense and only allowed 24 yards of rushing and only passed mid field 4 times all night. Sophomore QB Andrew King threw 7 for 17 for 77 yards.

Musselman will try to improve their playoff rating this week while Jefferson will try for the third straight week to improve on their win total which would surpass the win total for the past 2 seasons. Musselman and Jefferson will battle at Shenandoah Junction this Friday Night at 7:00pm and will be the Game of the Week on Sports Radio 1340 WEPM and

Handley, Va. (1-3) at Washington (1-3)

The Washington Patriots went on the road last week after the bye week trying to stop a two game losing streak against the Musselman Applemen, well nothing went right for the Patriots in the first half of play and the Patriots fell behind 41-0 at the break. But give credit to the Patriots as they did not quit and even though they lost the game they were able to score 34 second half points and were able to build on some things that they could work on going forward and throughout the rest of the season. Washington rushed the ball for 321 yards and two backs rushed for over 100 yards as Colin Gustines led the way with 185 yards on 22 carries and two scores, and Dante Washington rushed for 134 yards on 18 carries.

This week, the Washington Patriots will try to take the positives from last week and correct some of the things that hurt them in the first half and try to pick up their second win of the season against the Handley Judges. Handley comes into the game with a record of 1-3 and are coming off a bye week. Handley has struggled holding opponents down this year as the Judges have been outscored 147-66 and have been outscored 105-28 in the past two games.

Washington will try to continue to use the strong play of Colin Gustines who has scored 7 Touchdowns in the past three games and get their second win of the season this week. Game time from Washington High School will be at 7:00pm
