I was able to watch the Region II finals from the announcer's seat today at the Musselman gym. Buckhannon-Upshur, Hampshire, Hedgesville and Musselman girls volleyball teams competed for two spots in next weekend's state volleyball championships. As expected, the finals involved Hedgesviile and Musselman, so I was treated to another daughter versus daughter match.
My wife and I should have our heads examined for allowing our daughters to attend different high schools. But we believe in treating each child individuallly and granting them certain freedoms to make their own decisions. My heart ached when they first took the court against each other in a varsity match last year but now after nine contests over a two year span we know how to deal with it.
Both teams earned a spot in the State Championships next weekend and we will be hitting the road for Charleston with Hedgesville and Musselman shirts packed away. We are proud of them and their ability to cut their own path through school and sports. Whle it would have been ideal to have them celebrating together and to not have to deal with sensitivities around home, it has been a great ride. We have become closely associated wtih two great sets of parents and teammates, so in a sense our fun times have been doubled. Let's hope one of them brings back a state championship. If that happens, I will be more than glad to figure out how to deal with that at home.
